Identifying and describing the properties of 3-D shapes

Whichever resources you pick, remember to talk about the built, and record it. Use desired vocabulary. Make your own 3D shapes chart to record all the shapes, that you have built. Take pictures of them and describe the properties.

Describe the properties of 3D shapes

3D

Look around your house and collect all 3D shapes that you can. You would be surprised what you can find. I have found old shape sorter with these beauties!

3D shapes have: EDGES- where 2 faces meet VERTICES= corners FACES- flat or curved surface. For example a cylinder has 3 faces (2 flat and 1 curved).

Only 3D shapes have edges. 2D shapes have sides.

Prism has two the same ends and only flat faces. What about cube, cuboid, triangular prism, pentagonal prism, hexagonal prism and octagonal prism.

Make Your Own 3D Shapes

3Dstraws

Use cut up straws and playdough as connectors. Talk about the shape that you want to make. Look at it, count the vertices - and make the right amount of dough balls. Count the edges and get the correct number of straws. Now, have fun. Keep in mind that it is not easy. Set your mind more on having fun and talking about the properties of shapes, and not on creating a perfect representation.

Build a Prism with Geomag

A prism is made of 2 the same 2D shapes that make their top and bottom. There are joined by rectangular flat walls. The name of each prism is taken from a 2D shape that made its top and bottom. For example if your top and bottom is a pentagon - you will get Pentagonal Prism.

FEW CONSTRUCTION TIPS: Metal balls are vertices/corners; magnetic sticks are edges and plastic panels are faces.

Play BrainBox Maths

brainbox

It will help your child to learn math’s facts and practice memory. I use the abacus (to count points), 30 seconds timer - instead of 10seconds that came with the box. I found out that 10s. is not enough YET, for my 6 years old to memorise the page. We use abacus to count the points.

Before you start building explain to your child that the metal balls are vertices, magnetic sticks - edges and plastic panels - faces. Encourage your child to talk about their build. Talk about how many vertices do you need to build a cube? What about joing two cubes together?

Have fun dbuilding 3D shapes out of 2D shapes. It is great training to recognise 2D shapes on surface of 3D shapes.
